Halloween is approaching: Sunnyvale’s Harry Potter-themed light display opens, sparking a social media photo-op craze

With Halloween fast approaching, the festive spirit is intensifying across the Bay Area. This year, many homeowners in the South Bay have unleashed their creativity, transforming their front yards into stunning, themed displays. Two particularly eye-catching, viral-worthy Halloween home installations are now complete and illuminated, drawing crowds of onlookers and becoming must-see seasonal attractions this autumn.
In Sunnyvale, a private residence near Las Palmas Park—dubbed the “Harry Potter Magic House”—has once again become a pilgrimage site for fans of the wizarding world. The homeowner has conjured up some “dark magic,” turning the yard into a perfect replica of the Hogwarts universe. The display features banners representing the four Hogwarts houses, a meticulously detailed recreation of Professor Snape’s potion shelf, and the iconic Sorting Hat scene. Complemented by animated magical elements and sophisticated lighting effects, the setup makes visitors feel as though they have stepped straight into the films.
The “Magic House” is now open to the public daily from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with hours extended until 10:00 PM on weekends. Visiting after dark is highly recommended to fully experience the enchanting, immersive spectacle.
For those who prefer a classic American horror-thriller aesthetic, “The House of Nightmare” in San Jose is sure to deliver a chilling visual experience. This residence has made a terrifying comeback this year, featuring a host of spine-tingling installations. The homeowner has curated a collection of hyper-realistic skeletons and ghoulish monsters, all bathed in an eerie, dual-toned red and green light that envelops the entire property.
As night falls, the atmosphere becomes intensely macabre—whether you are driving by or stopping to take a closer look, the scene is guaranteed to send shivers down your spine while leaving you thoroughly thrilled.
Ma Zhao-xian, an engineer of Taiwanese descent, shared that he once happened to drive past the house at night. Not realizing that Halloween was just around the corner, he looked up to find a multitude of skulls seemingly turning toward him—a sight that gave him quite a fright!
